A clean first touch is what separates a smooth attacking move from a lost ball. Here are five simple habits our JIR Sports football coaches drill into every session.
1. Check your shoulder before the ball arrives
Knowing where the pressure is coming from lets you decide your next touch before the ball even reaches your foot.
2. Cushion, don’t stop
Think of your foot as a shock absorber. Relax the ankle on contact so the ball dies close to you instead of bouncing away.
3. Take your touch away from pressure
Your first touch should move the ball into space, not just control it on the spot.
4. Practice with both feet
Game situations rarely wait for your stronger foot. Split your practice reps evenly.
5. Use small-sided games to test it live
Drills build the technique; small-sided games under real pressure are where it actually sticks.
